Figure skaters getting ready for Central Regional Funskate
Competitors looking to continue winning trend
The Didsbury Figure Skating Club is gearing up for the Central Regional Funskate competition.
The Funskate will be held in Carstairs at the Carstairs Memorial Arena from January 27-29 and will feature 16 STARSkaters and 11 skaters from the club’s Canskate program.
The club recently competed in a competition in Olds as well, with several club skaters placing in their categories.
To prepare for the Funskate competition, coaches have had the skaters work on their individual elements.
“They’ve been practising really hard, they’re really getting ready,” said Llonda Leaver, one of the club’s coaches.
This won’t be the first Funskate for some of the club’s members. Skaters Bailey Wever and Kaira Hall both competed in last year’s Central Regional Funskate and both managed to place in their categories.
Others, like Kolby Thompson, are finding the frequent practising and coaching instruction very helpful in getting ready and confident for the event.
“They’re making us practise a lot, but it’s really helping,” she said.
There are some nerves involved as well, agree skaters Emma Longeway and Courtney Campbell.
“I’m a little bit nervous,” said Longeway.
“Last year the skaters did phenomenal, getting golds, silvers and bronzes,” said secretary Deanna Campbell. “We’ve got great coaches and the skaters have got the drive.”
“It’s the love of the sport too,” added vice-president Renai Thompson. “If they didn’t love it they wouldn’t do it.”
“I think the coaches are more nervous than they are,” said Leaver. “But everyone is really excited. It’s lots of fun.”
The Didsbury Figure Skating Club is seeing a fantastic year outside of competitions as well, with over 100 skaters participating in this season’s programs, and their large 50th anniversary carnival coming up in March.
