Skating club member to compete in Alberta Winter Games
One of Didsbury’s own will be competing in the Alberta Winter Games this coming February.
Fourteen-year-old Carly Dunn, who has been skating with the Didsbury Figure Skating Club for the last 10 years, competed in the Winter Games Run-Offs, where she qualified to advance to the games.
Dunn had also recently competed in the Junior Bronze category at the Calgary Region Open as well.
“My dad had wanted me to play hockey, but I didn’t want to,” said Dunn of first getting into figure skating, opting out of one ice sport for another.
“I was actually really surprised that I had qualified,” she added about making it to the Alberta Winter Games.
This will be Dunn’s first time competing in a provincial event of this level, but she remains confident and looks forward to taking part.
“I’m really excited, it’s good experience,” she said. “But I’m also a bit nervous; I’ve never done a big competition like this before.”
To prepare for the games, Dunn is working both on and off the ice and placing some added focus on some areas of her skating that she feels may need improvement, such as her double jumps.
“My spins are good though; I’m a good spinner,” Dunn added when asked what she felt most confident with in her skating. “I have good flow and expression as well.”
Dunn’s off-ice training consists of stretching, yoga and pilates to further prepare for the big event.
The club’s coaches and head coach, Cobi Grisack, have also been stepping up their game to help Dunn achieve her best prior to taking part in the competition.
“My coaches have been pushing me my whole life,” said Dunn. “They know how to push me and know what I want out of skating.”
