Wetlands project wins award at 2012 CEA Showcase Awards
Innovative design snags Award for Merit for Sustainable Design
The Town of Didsbury’s North Industrial Stormwater Wetland Project brought home honours following the 2012 Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Showcase Awards held in Calgary on Feb 10.
The town and its consulting engineers and ISL Engineering and Land Services won the Award of Merit for Sustainable Design, chosen due to the attractive and innovative design, which created a new park network and pathway with a three-hectare constructed wetland, while also associating the project with stormwater conveyance upgrades.
The project was competing against three other projects for the award, including the Fort McMurray Wastewater Treatment Plant, University of Calgary Cogeneration Projects, the new Calgary Science Centre and more.
“Not everyone has a valley to utilize in this unique way,” said Mayor Brian Wittal. “It shows we’ve tried to plan something very forward-thinking and incorporate it into the landscape.”
“It was an honour for both the ISL and town,” said Chief Administrative Officer Roy Brown on winning the award.
Since its completion the wetland project has seen much use and has received many positive comments from residents as well, according to Wittal.
“We wanted to have something that enhanced the valley and area for residents and make it useable,” said Wittal. “It provides an opportunity for nature without disturbance.”
