Colts wrap up 2011-2012 year second in north division

The Mountainview Colts have completed their 2011-2012 season, after finishing fifth in their division before playing a “fantastic” playoffs run that placed them second in the north division overall, according to team manager Don Edwards.

“We had a really young team that matured throughout the season,” said Edwards. “And in the playoffs they just got better.”

The Colts had entered the playoffs on a strong note, beating out the Airdrie Thunder and the Red Deer Vipers without a single loss in their first two series, putting them on a seven-game win streak.

During the north division semi-finals against the Blackfalds Ford Wranglers, however, the Colts’ fell short, losing four games.

“They ran out of gas,” said Edwards. “They had a tough series against Red Deer, and we had a lot of hurt boys too. They just had nothing left to give.”

The team’s winning strategy that had served them well in their first two series had been playing “good, disciplined hockey”, according to head coach Gord Olsen, which meant keeping out of the penalty box.

However, according to Edwards, this strategy was “not successful” in the Colts’ last series.

“It didn’t happen that way,” said Edwards. “They got tired, and took some lazy penalties.”

Regardless of the semi-final upset, Edwards said that the Colts still had a great run, despite being one of the youngest teams in the league.

“They had to work harder against these 19 to 20-year-old players on other teams,” said Edwards. “Every player improved immensely this year, though.”

The younger team also beat out last year’s top scorer record, 30, with two high-scorers with 46 and 45 goals.

Another exciting aspect for the playoffs and the season as a whole was the energy the community brought to the games as well.

“Our fans are the best fans in the league,” said Edwards. “We couldn’t ask for better. The fans were unbelievable.”

The Colts will be starting up their 2012-2013 season try-outs this coming August and September.
