Passion Drama pulls audience into interactive experience

The Redeemer Lutheran Church kicked off the Easter season with its yearly Passion Drama production on March 31 and April 1.

The play saw the combined efforts of the cast and crew present the Easter story for audiences over the weekend, and introduced audience interaction for this year.

“One of the things a number of people had asked was how to get the community attending into the development,” said Pastor Rob Mohns on the process of brainstorming ideas for Passion Drama 2012. “We felt we were doing well enough to handle that level of interaction.”

During the production, those watching had the opportunity to join the cast on stage at key moments in the drama, which Mohns said was quite successful.

“We’re thankful that people took part,” said Mohns. “People had said that it moved them, challenged them, and we had some return for other shows so they could take part.”

The process for putting on the drama begins in January, where materials such as costumes, props, scripts and more are assembled and a cast is chosen.

Two weeks before the show, the cast and crew undergo extensive practice of their lines, cues, and more.

“We want the cast to make it their own too, and not be frozen to a script,” added Mohns.

“Really, it’s a living drama, different things happen every year… It’s an opportunity for them to be witnesses and to relive the events of Easter.”
