DHS students heading to Bloomsday Run

Six students from Didsbury High School will be putting their best foot forward for the Bloomsday 2012 Run taking place in Spokane, Wash. on May 6.

The 12-kilometre run features over 50,000 runners and is for both competitive and casual runners, walkers, and those in wheelchairs to get outside and enjoy the springtime weather.

This is the seventh year DHS students will be attending the run, having gone to their first in 2000.

“We started it to try and promote running to our cross-country team in the off-season,” said Mark Leggette, who will be one of the teachers travelling with the students to take part in the run. “It gets an interest in running. And it’s a large, well-known event that is televised with overhead helicopters…seeing all those people running for such a big event is quite motivational for the students.”

To prepare for the run, students train off and on in the months leading up to the event, as most students are only used to running three- or four-kilometre stretches as opposed to the daunting 12-kilometre Bloomsday Run.

Students and chaperones will be leaving for Washington on May 4, where their weekend schedule will be centred around the run and also a fitness expo taking place in the area on the same weekend.

“It’s always fun,” said Leggette. “And with a smaller group too, you get to know the students and each other better.”
