Show 'n' Shine celebrates best in vehicles and town spirit
The 20th Annual Show ’n’ Shine is back again for another year on May 12, bringing out some of the best vintage vehicles and souped-up hot rods to Didsbury.
The event, which will start at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 3 p.m. with awards, will be back in its more traditional downtown location outside the train station, as opposed to last year outside the Credit Union.
A few specialty things had been planned for the 20th anniversary, but due to the busy season most were not able to happen for this year.
However, chairman Grant Svendsen predicts some special entertainment for the 25th anniversary, and said that “we put on a good party every year.”
Along with the usual judging categories and Mayor’s Pick, this year will also see the return of the Business Choice Award.
“Last year we instigated the businesses in town to get more involved,” said Svendsen. “Businesses sponsored a trophy for a business choice award, and we’ll be doing that again this year. It worked fabulously last year, so we’re going to stay with it, it gets everyone involved.”
Entrance into the event is by donation, with proceeds going to the Mountain View Food Bank.
“It’s how it’s always been,” said Svendsen. “It goes a long way with the community.”
Any additional funds collected at the event will be put back into the community for school groups and other local organizations.
As for why those both new and old to Didsbury should be coming out for this year’s show, Svendsen said, “There’s something special about this town, it has a good attitude. It’s a community with heart, we care about each other and everyone is involved with so many things. When people outside bring in their cars, they feel it too.”
“They love coming back, that’s the real kick,” added Svendsen. “It’s almost like a family get-together. We communicate and connect and show it, so many people who come back, when they leave they’ll tell us that they’ll be back again. That they enjoyed it and had a good time. And that makes us feel good, to hear that.”
