Reimer and Northcott to compete at provincials

Two Didsbury High School track and field athletes will compete with the best-of-the-best from around Alberta during the 2012 track and field provincials this week.

Grade 12 student Montana Reimer will be competing in high jump and hurdles at the

June 1-2 event in Edmonton while Grade 12 student Mike Northcott will be competing in shot put.

To qualify for provincials, athletes must attain a first or second placing in their respective events at zone competition, which took place last Wednesday.

The overall calibre of track zones is pretty

high, said Didsbury High School athletic director Ian Bates.

“A lot of these athletes train and participate in track and field all year long. Thus producing some very good athletes and a very competitive environment,” said Bates.

Didsbury High School athletes play a variety of sports and train for about one to two weeks before the zone track meet.

“So having athletes qualify for provincials with the limited practice time is a great accomplishment,” Bates said.

Reimer took first place in the high jump event at the CSAA zones last Wednesday with a 1.5 metre high leap.

She also placed second in hurdles with a time of 13:73.

The 28:15 she earned in the 200 metre was good enough to earn her a third place but kept her out of the running for competing in the event at provincials.

This is her second high school track and field provincial competition. She competed at last year’s provncials in the 200 metre high jump and hurdles last year.

This year’s provincials will be Northcott’s first.

He earned his qualifying spot at provincials by attaining first place in the shot put event at zones with a throw of 12.44 metres.
